Strength Through Peace has organized monthly Afternoon Peace Vigils (formerly known as “Brown Bag Lunch Vigils”) outside the offices of Representative Betsy Markey, Representative Cory Gardner, and Senator Michael Bennet beginning in February of 2010 to draw attention to the high cost of militarism and war. In 2011, we focused on supporting the Operation Recovery Campaign, sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War (www.ivaw.org) and the Peoples’ Budget, sponsored by the Congressional Progressive Caucus (http://cpc.grijalva.house.gov/).
In December 2011, Strength Through Peace decided to suspend the Afternoon Peace Vigils until further notice. We intend to continue our support for the Operation Recovery Campaign, as well as our support for shifting federal spending priorities away from the military and towards social welfare and environmental programs.
Our last Afternoon Peace Vigil outside of Senator Bennet’s office was held on November 16th, 2011. To read the letter we delivered to Senator Bennet’s staff, click here. To read Senator Bennet’s response, click here.
Our last Afternoon Peace Vigil outside of Representative Gardner’s office was held on October 19th, 2011. To read the letter we delivered to Representative Gardner’s staff, click here. We have not received a response from Representative Gardner to date.
