Questions for candidates

September 30, 2008

As the election draws closer, it is vitally important that we understand where candidates running for office stand on the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, torture, our civil liberties. Especially now that Wall Street is seeking a $700 billion bailout, we should ask whether spending billions of dollars on two invasions and occupations that have killed untold numbers of innocent civilians is the most effective strategy for confronting extremism or if the so-called "war on terror" only breeds hatred and more violence.

We also should ask whether and how candidates plan to restore Habeas Corpus and what steps they will take to bring back accountability to our government. Strength Through Peace has posed seven questions to each candidate running for Colorado's 4th Congressional District and Colorado's open U.S. Senate seat that address these issues. To date, three of five candidates have responded to theses questions.

To view both questions and candidate responses, please visit the Strength Through Peace Web site at www.strengththrough peace.org and click on "Questions for Candidates." If you are not satisfied by the responses or lack there of, ask additional questions of the candidates directly. Democracy only functions if citizens are engaged in the political process.
