Salazar doesn't work with constituents

Open letter to Sen. Ken Salazar,

In the last half-year, our organization has corresponded with you twice.

On March 19, more than 30 of us gathered at your Fort Collins office to deliver a letter asking four questions. We wanted to know how your vote to spend $70 billion on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan could be reconciled with statements on your Web site. We waited. Twice we visited your office, inquiring about a response. Meanwhile, you gave President Bush another blank check, this time for $165 billion. After eight weeks, we received a form letter that made no reference to your Web site, our questions or the billions of dollars.

On June 9, still hoping to achieve some communication, we delivered a second letter to your office, requesting answers to the original questions and urging you to support Senate bill 2426. After nine weeks and another couple visits, we received a reply, which included an apology for the delay - due, it said, to replying in a "detailed way." We accept your apology and observe that the letter does not mention or answer the four original questions. It assures us you will exercise your constitutional role in matters of foreign relations when they come to the Senate. But our concern, and Bill 2426, was about Bush's attempt to establish long-term foreign commitments without bringing them to the Senate!
