Are we missing an important point of J.
David McSwane's four-word editorial? Why would the Collegian's
editorial board resort to profanity when it comes to the
president? Answers are far too numerous to discuss in a Soapbox,
so let me just limit it to the war in Iraq.
Bush had already planned on invading Iraq
in 1999, according to Mickey Herskowitz a longtime Bush family
friend: "One of the things he said to me, is, 'One of the keys
to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a
commander-in-chief.' And he said, 'My father had all this
political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of
Kuwait and he wasted it... He said, 'If I have a chance to
invade Iraq, if I had that much capital, I'm not going to waste
it. I'm going to get everything passed I want to get passed and
I'm going to have a successful presidency.'" (Houston Chronicle,
Page 10 Nov. 1, 2004)
Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill said
Bush sought a way to invade Iraq eight months before 9/11 and
that it was topic "A" on the very first day of the Bush
presidency.
"From the very first instance, it was
about Iraq. It was about what we can do to change this regime.
Day one, these things were laid and sealed."
"It was all about finding a way to do it.
That was the tone of it. The president saying 'Go find me a way
to do this,'" O'Neill said.
We also know from O'Neill that in the
opening days of the Bush presidency, the battle plans already
had been drawn and the oil fields already divvied up ("60
Minutes" "Bush Sought Way to Invade Iraq?" Jan 11, 2004).
Richard Clarke, the counter-terrorism czar
under four presidents, said to us after 9/11 "The president
dragged me into a room with a couple of other people, shut the
door, and said, 'I want you to find whether Iraq did this.' Now,
he never said, 'Make it up.' But the entire conversation left me
in absolutely no doubt that George Bush wanted me to come back
with a report that said Iraq did this.
"I said, 'Mr. President. We've done this
before. We have been looking at this. We looked at it with an
open mind. There's no connection.'
"He came back at me and said, "Iraq!
Saddam! Find out if there's a connection.' And in a very
intimidating way. I mean that we should come back with that
answer. (60 Minutes "Clarke's take on Terror" Mar 21, 2004)."
Bush told the American people, "We've
learned that Iraq has trained al-Qaida members in bomb-making
and poisons and deadly gases," We later learn our intelligence
agencies knew that information obtained during torture was
false, but the White House still used it to sell us the war nine
months later (Newsweek "Al Libi's Tall Tales Nov 10, 2005).
We know from the head of British
intelligence, Sir Richard Dearlove, that Bush wanted to remove
Saddam, but the intelligence and facts were being fixed (London
Times Front page, "The Secret Downing Street Memos" May 1st,
2005).
Bottom line ... Bush lied us into war. He
intended war all along to control the Iraqi oil. Bush was just
waiting for an excuse and 9/11 was his lucky day. With
Congress's inaction on impeachment, Bush gets off easy with a
simple curse word considering his damage to our country's honor.
